Does VLC play VCD?
Video CD (VCD for short, also known as Digital Video CD) is a retro video format and the first format distributed on films using the 120 mm (4.7 inches) standard. The format was widely bought in Southeast Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East, replacing Betamax VHS and systems in the regions until DVD-Video finally became available in the first decade of the 21st century.
Video CD (VCD for short, also known as Compact Disc Digital Video) is a unique home video format and the first model for distributing films on standard 120mm (4.7 inch) optical discs. VCDs are played in specialized VCD players and are widely played on most DVD players, home servers, and some game consoles.
The format can be a standard digital data format for storing video on a CD. VCDs are indeed playable in dedicated VCD players and are generally playable on most DVD players, some laptops, and game consoles. However, they tend to play poorly in most Blu-ray disc players, DVD / Blu-ray capable car audio systems in addition to game consoles such as Sony PlayStation and Xbox, due to the lack of backward compatibility support for older MPEGs. … 1 or cannot play MPEG-1 through .dat files along with MPEG-1 in MPEG-1, AVI and Matroska Files.
Video CD quality has been created in 1993 [1] [2] from Sony, Philips, Matsushita and JVC; it bears the same name as the White Paper Standard. In the same year, the MPEG-1 form was released.
Although consumers have been replaced by other multimedia systems, VCD will continue to be marketed as a low-cost video format in an increasing number of regions such as Asia from 2021. [quote required]
A Brief History
LaserDisc was first released on December 15, 1978 in Atlanta, Georgia. [3] This 12 “(12”) drive could hold hours of analog audio and video (digital audio was added a few years later) on both sides. For the most part, the LaserDisc delivered twice the image quality of a VHS cassette and much better analog audio quality than mono VHS recorders (although the difference to the more expensive HiFi VHS stereo is no doubt minimal).

With its simple user interface and powerful scanning engine, Fortect quickly finds and fixes a broad range of Windows problems - from system instability and security issues to memory management and performance bottlenecks.
Philips then teamed up with Sony to develop a new type of disc – the CD or CD. Introduced in Japan in the 1980s (1983 from the US to Europe), the compact disc has an approximate (4120 mm. 7 inches) solid single-sided diameter. OutThe hard drive was originally designed to store digitized sound and proved to be a hit in the music industry.
A few years later, Philip decided to give CDs the ability to produce video using the same technology as his LaserDisc counterpart. This led to the redevelopment of video compact discs (CD-V) in 1988. The small disk size severely limited its ability to store analog video; Up to 5 minutes of graphic information could fit on the surface of the disc (despite the fact that the sound was digital). As a result, CD-V distribution was limited to audio-video playback and was quickly discontinued during the 1991 trial.
Is VCD still used?
In the early 1990s, engineers were able to digitize and compress video signals to improve storage efficiency. Since this young format could record 74/80 minutes of audio and video in excess of 650/700 MB per disc, getting rid of CD movies is finally a reality. Additional capacity was gained by reducing error correction (minor errors in the data stream were expected to go unnoticed by viewers.)spruce). This format was known as Video CD or VCD.
VCD has had a short period of success in producing all excellent feature films in the appropriate format (usually as a set of two games). However, the advent of the CD-R disc and associated recorder stopped the function of removing movies from their tracks, it was just that the VCD format could not prevent unauthorized (and perfect) copying. Sup> [citation needed] As of 2013, VCDs are still available in several countries in Asia, but now with copy protection. [link required]
MPEG2 vs MPEG4 The difference between MPEG2 and MPEG4 is that MPEG2 is suitable for video encoding and therefore is compatible with DVD media. On the other hand, MPEG4 is good for mobile devices and streaming video from land. MPEG2 was designed to facilitate the distribution of video to DVD.
The development of more sophisticated optical CD formats with higher capacities gave rise to the DVD format, which was written and released with a copy protection mechanism a few years later. DVD players use laser processing, which has shorter wavelengths than the methods used on CDs, making the recorded sheets of paper smaller so that more important information can be stored. The DVD was so successful that it eventually supplanted VHS from the video market once a suitable camera became widely available. Nevertheless , VCDs became widespread in developing countries, where they are still used today due to their particularly low manufacturing and retail costs. [link required]
Specifications
Structure
Video CDs conform to the CD-i Bridge data format and are created with tracks in CD-ROM XA mode. The first VCD of track 1 is in CD-ROM XA multiple Forms 1 mode and stores metadata and recipe information in the ISO 9660 file system. This track can also contain other non-essential recording data and is displayed by operating systems when the disc is loaded. This track may not be present on the VCD that is currently running, but may not display correctly on computers. [4]
The remaining tracks are usually found on the XA Mode 2 Form 2 CD and contain video clips and audio clips multiplexed into an MPEG water program container (MPEG-PS), but audio tracks from CDs are also permitted. [4] When using Mode 2 Form 2, approximately 800 megabytes of VCD data can be stored on an 80 minute CD (compared to 700 megabytes when usingand Mode 1 CD-ROM). This is achieved by removing the display of error correction redundancy in Mode 1. It has been estimated that small errors in the video as well as in the audio stream go largely unnoticed. This, combined with the raw bit rate of VCD and A / V, means nearly 80 minutes of VCD content can be stored on an 80 minute CD, 74 extract VCD content on a 74 minute CD, and so on. This was done in part to ensure compatibility with existing CD drive technology, early “1x” powered CD drives.
Videos
- Compression: MPEG-1
- Aspect ratio: 4: 3
- Resolution:
- NTSC: 352-240
- PAL / SECAM: 352-288
- frame rate:
- NTSC: 29.97 or 23.976 fps.
- PAL / SECAM: 45 fps
- Bandwidth: 1150 kilobits per second.
- Flow Control: Constant Flow
Although many DVD-Video masters support VCD playback, there is no doubt that VCD-Video is only compatible with the DVD-Video standard if encoded soon There are 29.97 images per second, 25 images per second.
The selected resolutions 352 × 240 and then 352 × 288 (or SIF) were made because they are half the horizontal and top-to-bottom resolution of NTSC video and half the horizontal PAL resolution (the vertical PAL screen resolution is already half of 576 new active lines). This is half the resolution of an analog VHS tape, which is ~ 330 horizontal and 480 vertical (NTSC) or 330 × 576 (PAL).
Audio
- Compression: MPEG-1 Audio Layer II
- Sampling rate: 44 100 (44 Hz, 1 kHz)
- Output: Dual Route, Stereo or Dolby Surround
- Data transfer rate: 224 kilobits per second.
- Flow Control: Constant Flow
Like most CD-based formats, VCD audio is incompatible with the DVD-Video standard in use due to a different sampling rate; DVD uses 48 kHz and VCD uses 44.1 kHz.
Benefits Of Compression
To view the VCD file on a computer, use the Video LAN Client (VLC) video player. VLC is a free and versatile video player known to play all types of video files. Go to Launch VCD to open it in the player. Click OK to open the file.
