Active Directory (AD) may be a Microsoft proprietary directory service. It runs on Windows Server and allows administrators to manage permissions and access to network resources. A directory is a hierarchical structure used to find information about network objects. Directory service such as Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS), provides the methods needed to store data directories and make those documents available to network users and administrators. For example, DS ad stores customer account information such as names, passwords, phone forms, etc. and allows other registered users on the same network to use this information.
Active Directory stores information about network elements and makes it easy for administrators and users to store and use this information. Active Directory uses an ordered data store as the basis for other hierarchical and logical organization of directory information. data

How do I find Active Directory in Windows?
Select Start > Administrative Tools > Active Directory Users and Computers.In the Active Directory Users and Computers tree, find and select your domain name.Expand the market tree to find your way through the Active Directory hierarchy.
