BACKGROUND

A recently discovered vulnerability in the Windows Print Spooler service, commonly known as PrintNightmare, allows remote code execution (RCE) on any server workstation or use of an enabled print spooler service. Why were exploits for this particular vulnerability released prior to the release of security patches, making it a critical zero-day vulnerability? This is where the plot thickens. It was originally categorized as a low-severity vulnerability that could allow local privilege escalation (LPE); and on June 21, Microsoft changed the classification because the bug was proven to also allow remote execution.Code Reading (RCE).

As soon as the new CVE was released, security researchers Zipeng Huo, Piotr Madei, and Yunhai Zhang, who previously reported the vulnerability to Microsoft (apparently several years ago) and believed it had already been fixed, decided to proceed with publishing their work, including proof of concept (PoC). They shared it on Twitter when they discovered a new Windows print spooler service vulnerability that enables RCE, assuming it’s CVE-2021-1675.
