An error code may appear indicating ichat uninstall messages when reinstalling the beta. It turns out there are several steps you can take to fix this problem, which we’ll discuss a little later.

I managed to switch back to iChat, but the new iOS 6 update includes re-introduction of iMessages, but still seems to be much better than before …
I am using OSX 10.7.5 and have no plans to upgrade to OSX 10.8 yet.

You guessed. Messages are integrated into the main operating system. Start your Mac with CMD + R and choose Reinstall Mac OS X. This should only update the operating system files and of course will not affect your personal information, but it is still worth making a backup.
