We have a computer that has been upgraded from Win2000 to WinXP Pro SP2 and is now trying to install all the patches and it usually does not hang when installing SP3. It covers half of the setup phase and just pops out. I was looking at Microsoft’s solution: running a .cmd document to set registry permissions, some changes, a few errors, restart, retry XP SP3, everything happened. I turn offl our antivirus TrendMicro is the same, we really only have 2 applications that we use for this package, this is related to our security system and also dialing to get updates and make changes to the administrative account. I think it should write with registry permissions, but I don’t know where to look or what to change when installing SP3.
HM. My personal next step, if it’s definitely a work machine, is to erase and reinstall. It certainly isn’t worth it.
When you try to upgrade Windows XP systems to Service 3 Pack, you and your family will receive one of the following error messages:
- Fix some package configuration errors. Access denied.
- Service Pack 3 installation failed. Service Pack installation cannot complete with error
Less complete
- Common DoRegistryUpdates errors during SP3 installation include system errors during installation — both during installation and duplicate files and registry changes.

If you receive an “Access Denied” message when you open a file and folder, even if you have a Windows XP-based computer, you may need to reset the “Full Control” or “Folder” permissions. Please note that read / write access is only available on NTFS.
Do you only need Service Pack 3? Please note that Windows XP is no longer supported. The Windows XP media itself can no longer be downloaded from Microsoft because it is no longer supported.
