Until June 2016, nothing was known for sure about the origin of all papyri. Prior to the publication of Ariel Sabar’s document, it was reported that the fragment was acquired by an anonymous owner in the late 1990s as part of a cache based on papyri and other documents. This cache is said to have been purchased by a German-American collector who in turn acquired it in East Germany in the 1960s. Other documents in this cache included: (a) a typewritten letter dated July 1982 addressed to Hans-Ulrich Laukamp, away from Prof. Dr. Peter (Munro’s Egyptological Seminar, Free University of Berlin), who mentions only one of the papyri and reports that his colleague, Prof. Vecht, also identified it as a fragment of the 4th century AD Gospel of John in Coptic, and clients’ comments regarding its preservation; and (b) an excellent undated and unsigned handwritten note in German, apparently relating to the gospel, including a passage about the wife of Jesus. According to this note, “Professor Vecht” believed that this was ourthe only example of a text in which Jesus literally refers to a-woman. Professor Gerhard Vecht worked at the Faculty of Egyptology at the Free University of Berlin. Laukamp died in early 2001, Vecht in 2006, and Munro in 2009.[26]
