Over the past few weeks, some of our users have told us they have encountered media player windows with the avi codec.
When creating video files, they can be compressed to reduce the size of the registry using a tool (or compressor) installed on the creator’s computer. If you are playing an image as a video, your computer must have a decompressor capable of reading that particular storage format. This program is known as a codec.
When clients try to play a file that only uses a codec that has never been installed on their computer, Windows Media Player tries to download the codec from a specific Microsoft server. If a codec is available, Windows Media Player installs it on your computer and then plays the content. However, if the codec isn’t easy found on the server (for example, because most of the codecs were not created by Microsoft), Windows Media Player usually displays a message stating that a codec is missing on your computer.
In some cases, the file you are trying to play uses a codec that is not actually available or is not compatible with Windows Media Player. If so, you may not be able to use Windows Media Player to play that particular .avi file.
To fix this problem, find the correct codec and download it.

Note. If the link for the codec is indeed available, search the Internet for a general-purpose codec to find where it is also available. If you are unable to determine which codec to always have or not to list, the codec may not be available for sale. Or it may not be compatible with the player m Windows Media. In some cases, the error message contains any identifier, a codec called a FourCC identifier. You can use the FourCC ID to find the manufacturer who made our own codec. Then see if you can get all the codecs you need from the manufacturer.

Note. If the FourCC ID is not listed in the error message, unfortunately you will not be able to play this exclusive .avi file with Windows Media Player.
Use FourCC as an identifier to identify the manufacturer who created the codec. For example, in step 3, identifyThe fourcc was “vcr2”. Therefore, search for “vcr2” in the FOURCC column to find out the codec and manufacturer. In this example, you can very well see that “ATI Video Codec 2” can be listed as the codec name, and “ATI Technologies” is listed as a specific manufacturer (or owner).
If you cannot find a codec or manufacturer in the list, you can use the FourCC ID to do a full Internet search for the codec and manufacturer.
Note. Please note that not all manufacturers provide their codecs for download. If you cannot get the required codec, including the manufacturer, you cannot directly use Windows Media Player to play all these .avi files.
