Apple has posted a landmark article on codec support changes that lists codecs that will no longer be compatible with macOS Catalina due to the 64-bit transition.
This includes Avid codecs, including DNxHD and DNxHR, which I insert to transcode any media, including Media Composer.
Is Avid working to resolve compatibility issues with these codecs? Is the new Avid codec being finalized to meet the new requirements? Do I need to recode my media to use the new codec, or is Avid backward compatible?
Contrary to previous facts about updating support for third-party video codecs with the release of macOS Catalina, in addition to discontinuing native third-party codecs in the corresponding macOS, in addition to the excellent press release Avid announced at IBC last weekend in 2019, Avid seems to support macOS for Avid DNxHR and DNxHD codecs.
As part of its IBC 2019 review, Avid introduced enhanced end-to-end workflows.about video editing with ProRes integration for Windows and built-in support for ProRes RAW rendering in Media Composer, as obvious as the built-in support for To have DNx codecs.
As a diet for this press, Media Composer Avid states the following …
“Apple provides you with 64-bit codecs for DNxHR and DNxHD decoders in a Pro Video Format package that Apple is available for download for all users. These integrations enable content creators and post-production distributors to create high-quality ProRes content regardless of their operating system, saving time during the creative storytelling process. “
“Finally, the continued use of Avid’s diverse DNxHD and DNxHR decoders over macOS is a huge advantage for successful Apple and Avid developers and thus becomes the durability of DNx encoded hardware. to MXF and QuickTime Files from enthusiastic creators. “

Now What? What Do We Do When MacOS Catalina Is Released?
The easiest way is to answer nothing. You do not need to update to macOS Catalina Avid unless you are the author You are wondering. We understand that it won’t take long if macOS Mojave is supported.
It is also worth noting that in addition to the upcoming Catalina release, a number of names, including Avid, strongly advise users NOT to upgrade to macOS Catalina unless various issues are resolved. p>

For simplicity, a summary of what we have posted is below so you can probably compare the obvious changes …
Support For Avid Pro Tools And Video Codecs Released June 2019
After discussing what needs to be done with the right Pro tools to be ready for Catalina, macOS, we welcome François Careuil, Director of Product Management | Audio workstations and control panelsI am only at Avid and he gave us this clear statement …
“We are already working closely with Apple to provide fast support for all Pro Tools styles. Mojave has mainly tuned in for performance and introduced some unique issues that we expect Catalina support will be much easier : Just a few 32-bit frameworks to port to 64-bit, which is not just a complex process. We also use workflow continuity solutions for individual users in QuickTime. “
To be clear: Pro Tools is widely believed to be incompatible with macOS Catalina until Avid can do a lot in 64-bit Pro Tools code, and Pro Tools users should wait while Avid generates a transcript Catalina compatible with Pro Tools before possibly upgrading their Apple Macs to Catalina. Also note, as we mentioned earlier in this article, that the list of Apple Macs that are compatible with macOS Catalina will be shorter than the older, more powerful Mac.
Support For Avid Pro Tools And Video Codecs Released December 2018
To anyone working in video, including those in audio post-production, we understand the experts say Catalina heralds the end of local OS-level support for stellar video codecs, especially for Pro Tools users who are passionate about DNxHD. Avid released this statement in December 2018 …
“Apple has published and defined a best article on future codec support with Apple X’s FCP, which does not guarantee DNxHD and DNxHR in future versions of this product. DNxHD and DNxHR in QuickTime wrapper are traditionally fully supported on the platform MacOS by various products, either through native integration with various macOS-based applications, or through a WordPress plugin, the mechanism that QuickTime provides a number of libraries.
With the end of support for the QuickTime 7 Library, support for these formats is now likely based on any multimedia application that initially promotes these 64-bit codecs as compatible libraries Optimized performance is available thanks to the exact Avid SMPTE VC-3 standard specifications on which the DNx codec family is based.
For Apple and macOS customers, this announcement does not apply to Pro Tools and Media Composer. other products that decided to implement DNxHD and DNxHR natively as above, or MXF based DNxHD / HR through casings. DNxHD, DNxHR, Pro Tools, and Media W
