It is worth reading these repair tips when you run into Compiz memory leak error.

I recently followed the weekly updates on how they affect performance as well as Compiz resource usage since I posted around 11.10 (I am currently evaluating 12.04 and 14.04). What I’ve seen so far has increased CPU and memory usage (especially memory). I compare settings on 12/04/14 without updates, then apply multiple updates and also compare 12/04 to help 04/14. For example, Nautilus uses less than 35MB (for me it was about 70MB and 150MB doing the same thing with computers from different manufacturers).
Some changes were also made to other processes that brought my total memory usage down from roughly 850MB to 610MB (I also use services like Apache, MySQL, etc.). the only thing that remains much the same is Compiz. However, the download requires over 100 MB. If you are only using the desktop with Unity and other programs, it takes up 133MB (at the moment). What options can I use to reduce memory size
What optimizations can reduce Compiz memory consumption?
NOTE. I already installed Compiz Config Settings Manager (CCSM).

This is more like my experience of reducing Compiz RAM consumption. The best I can say is the lowering of the texture quality in their OpenGL plugin, but that won’t change much.
Another source of Compiz memory increases its usage, as does memory leaks. Sometimes it seems like it is triggered by indicators, but it could be from other sources as well (not entirely sure yet).
My solution is to periodicallyski restart Unity with a simple program, including:
#kill compiz completely, including all child or child processes, to free memory:killall Compiz -9 run unity and you will get a great free terminal back.Unity and denial
I know these are not the best answers, so I’m asking this question myself to see if anyone has better advice.

sudo kill -HUP
This is not expensive, but it frees up some of the wasted memory without stopping the processfully.

I know this is an unattractive post, but Gus’s answer helped me a lot, I want to add something to it. I did this (on Ubuntu 12.04):
- Alt + F2 (run application)
- Scheduled Tasks
- New task
-
killall recurrent compiz -HUP
- Every day at 00:00.
Compiz now automatically restarts every night without the need to determine the process ID.
My problem was that when I left my screen locked for a few days, it took me about 30 seconds to convince me that you unlock the screen. In addition, Compiz had a memory capacity of around 1000MB.
