What is DHCP on my computer?
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a network management protocol chosen to automate the manufacturing process of devices inIP networks, allowing them to use network services such as DNS, NTP, and any UDP or TCP-based communication protocols.
Use the IP address, subnet prefix length, gateway type fields and IP location parameters to specify the IP address.
-
To specify a DNS server, enter the addresses of the central and secondary DNS servers in the Preferred DNS and Alternate DNS fields.
-
-
If users select Automatic (DHCP), the IP and DNS server parameters are usually set automatically by your router or most other access points (recommended).
-
To simplify the management of TCP / IP settings, we recommend using Automated Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). DHCP automatically assigns IP addresses to your network operator’s computers if your network supports it.
If you select “Manual”, you can manually configure the IP address and system DNS address settings.
-
-
When you’re done, select “Save.”

Can Windows 10 do DHCP?
Windows 10 itself does not go through a good DHCP server. It has very few aspects related to Internet Connection Sharing (it still exists in Win10), but you cannot customize it in a specific way, and I would not recommend implementing it.
Select the “Network” tab. Under This connection sometimes uses the following items, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPv4) or Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP / IPv6), and then select Properties.
-
To report your IPv4 IP address settings, do the following:
-
To obtain IP settings automatically via DHCP, select Obtain Exclusive IP Address Automatically and then OK.
-
To specify an IP address, select Use the following IP address scan, and then enter the IP address parameters in the IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Standard Gateway fields as usual.
-
-
Windows 10 itself doesn’t have a good DHCP network. It has very minimal functionality and is also part of the Internet Connection Sharing feature (still exists in Win10), but you cannot configure it in any way, combined with its use, I would not recommend it.
To define settings for IPv6 IP addresses, do one of the following:
-
To automatically configure IP settings using DHCP, select Obtain IPv6 Address Automatically, and then click OK.
-
To specify an IP address, select Use the following IPv6 address, and then enter the IP address settings in the IPv6 Address, Subnet Prefix Length, and Standard Port fields.
-
-
To specify the DNS server address settings, do one of the following:
-
To obtain the DNS server address automatically using DHCP, select Obtain DNS server address automatically, and then click OK.
-
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a client / server process that automatically provides an Internet Protocol (IP) host with its IP address and various associated configuration information such as subnet mask and default gateway.
To enter a DNS server address, select Use the following DNS server addresses, followed by the primary and therefore secondary DNS server addresses in the Preferred DNS Server and Alternate DNS Server fields.

-
Select Advanced to change advanced DNS, WINS and IP settings.
Can Windows be a DHCP server?
Windows Server 2016 includes a DHCP Server, which is also an optional network server role that you can deploy on your website to lease IP addresses and lots of other information for DHCP clients. All Windows based guest operating systems include a DHCP client as part of TCP / IP, and in addition, no charge includes a DHCP client.
