Frank Luna’s books on DX9 and DX10 are the only good books I’ve seen that use Direct3D. His novel DX11, I think, won’t be out until next year (looks like he had to add another editor), DX11, but it’s pretty close to DX10 in terms of basic 3D graphics.
The only thing I’m going to tell you is that the title is a bit misleading, as there isn’t really any programming for poker games – this is a purely graphical programming book.

Just an update for this method. Frank Luna’s books are great for learning DirectX where you don’t have to clutter up the syntax and get the math attribute of what’s going on.
If you need a reliable and up-to-date guide, I recommend you practice your rendering and computation using Direct3D11. The book goes into detail about all DirectX11 resources, full pipeline rendering, tessellation, DirectCompute, HLSL, multithreaded rendering, and possibly a detailed discussion of common nylon rod rendering implementations, dynamic tessellation, image processing, deferred instructions, modeling (using DirectCompute). and multithreaded paraboloid display.

Also make sure it contains HLSL-related parts, as DX10 + definitely doesn’t have any Fixex pipeline left. It seems like many books don’t cover this niche at all, which IMO thinks is a huge mistake.Msdn is a great resource on hlsl.
