Over the past few days, some of our users have encountered a well-known error message regarding running Runas on Windows Server 2008. This issue occurs for a number of reasons. Let’s discuss this now.

If you are using Windows Server 2008 R2, or just want to check if this process is enabled, you will need to press SHIFT while right-clicking on the desired application. If you literally turn it on, you will see the function “Start another user …”, where at this stage you can select the user under which the application will be processed.
Standard Windows Server 09 installations provide a stability component, User Account Control (UAC), to control the contexts in which processing occurs. The default configuration is Execute, which runs as a registered user or usually as an administrator. The variation with elements of the latter variation is that it is not allowed to specify a specific username and therefore only affects the local administrative license. Don’t bother pressing [Shift] unnecessarily and trying different context menus. To get the categorical run as function that you need in terms of best practice permissions, you need to go back to the inner bag and get some tips.
ShellRunas in Version 1.01 (of which sysinternals is now part of TechNet) will do the job. Downloading ShellRunas is simple and using the following line will activate the tool:
shellrunas / reg
This guide installs the “Run As” workaround in the Start menu for use through the Windows shell. Figure A shows a huge Windows Server 2008 server with the Sysinternals tool installed.Figure A

With its simple user interface and powerful scanning engine, Fortect quickly finds and fixes a broad range of Windows problems - from system instability and security issues to memory management and performance bottlenecks.
The ShellRunas command can also be fully installed without any additional steps for unique and unusual iterations of the command. Alternatively, the application can be uninstalled using the unreg parameter if you think you want to remove everything from certain configurations. Ironically, this tool should not change the existence of a secondary Windows logon service, which is about effectively using alternate credentials.
Being able to expose explicit credentials is not difficult in any good administrative practice. This is especially important for accounts that remain members of the Domain Admins group. ShellRunas will allow oporganizations will largely retain their security practices when migrating to Windows Server 2008.

You probably know that Windows Server 2008 cannot allow you to “run A as a different user”, only “Run as administrator”.
You should also be aware of this. Authors shellrunas, Sysinternals. ShellRunAs adds to the functions the command line RunAs, the context menu of executable programs. After loading the ShellRunAs / reg command, you have the option to right-click any program, select Run as another user, and enter the credentials of the user you want to treat as a program.
This feature allows you to connect to the server with the least privilege when running programs that require higher privileges, keeping your device secure.
The only problem with ShellRunAsis that there is one user per installation. This means that it usually needs to be “installed” on the server for each user. This is because ShellRunAs / reg is constantly updating the record for the current human structure (HKCU). This can be a problem for servers that have many different people, such as a terminal server.
How to make this technology available to all users of the server? Read on to find out how.
- Download shellrunas Sysinternals and extract ShellRunAs.exe in% SystemRoot% System32
- Use Notepad to create a ShellRunAs.reg reg file with the following content:
Windows Registry Editor 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Software Classes lnkfile Shell Run as a Different User … Command]
@ = “” C: Windows System32 ShellRunas.exe “”% 1 “% *”[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Software Classes SystemFileAssociations .exe Shell Run when another user … Command]
@ = “” C: Windows System32 ShellRunas.exe “”% 1 “% *”[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Software Classes SystemFileAssociations . Msc Shell Run as a different user … command]
@ = “” C: Windows System32 ShellRunas.exe “”% 1 “% *”
- Finally, double click the ShellRunAs.reg file to mark it in the registry.
Now right click on a package or program and you will see a new option “Run as a different user”. It will be better for all users of the server if you do not have to register it as a single user.
Note. When a user selects How, he launches another user for the first time because he must accept the End User License Agreement. This only happens once, as the license agreement for each user is recorded in a specific HKCU hive.
Incidentally, this functionality as another user, as well as the function performed as an administrator, is inherent here in Server Windows 2008 R2.
