Kernel removal is usually done by the linker, this is a normal part of OSX startup.
Sometimes I get stuck on a good shuttle, especially after a system update, but a full front panel reset looks good (sometimes it takes 2 resets for a competition). The crash seems to happen at a random point in the boot process, just before it reaches the image displayed on the screen.
