Whenever possible, use a timeout for security. But, as mentioned in the general comments, this is not always a system (e.g. р, in non-interactive mode). After that, I agree that “kludge” ping is considered the next best option because it is actually very simple. Having said that, I suggest another option … embed a VB script.

The basic solution also has all possible uses. VBS can often do what Batch cannot, or at least with great ease. With the right technique, you can mix the two (not “seamless”, but also “functional” …).

Here is a short description of how to develop, run, and then modify a temporary script. The script will put you to sleep (in this example method for 3 seconds).

It took 30 seconds even if 5 * 5 = 25 is selected. I explain that there are 7 pops Ping current for 5 seconds each, instead there is a delay of about 1 second. between ping attempts: there is no particular reason to wait for an individual result afterwards, if you ping again right away, it is better to have a “network” a little time to recover from any problem than it had.
