Sometimes your computer may return an error code indicating that a SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition service pack is available. There are many reasons that can cause this problem.
Microsoft is distributing bug fixes in packages. Service packs keep your product up to date. Service packs include updates and can include system software tools, drivers, and add-ons that can be easily combined for easy download. The services are cumulative. Each new service pack contains all the fixes that were preliminary service packs and all new types of fixes. You do not need to install the previous service pack before installing the latter frequently. For example, you do not need to install SQL Server 1999 SP1 before configuring SQL Server 2000 SP2.
The SQL Server 2000 services provided are listed in the following sections. Each section of the service pack contains the following:

Note. Since most of the changes made in SP3a are configuration-related, you do not need to apply SP3a to most SQL Server 2000 MSDE or 2000s instances that have already been upgraded to SP3.
If you have instances that have not yet upgraded to SP3, do always upgrade those instances directly to SP3a, not SP3. In addition, if you have copies of the SP3 download files that you intended to use to update Destiny, instead of using the SP3a boot images or the SP3a CD, you should delete those copies.
Applications that ship and install MSDE 2000 must install SP3a instead of SP3. Although you can use SP3a on SQL Server SP3 or MSDE 2000 SP3 instances since the late 1990s, it has little effect on those instances.
