Symptom 1
Typical reasons: * The mail host you are trying to connect to is not performing POP3 operations; * A firewall / antivirus application (which is installed directly on the workstation / server where WebMail is installed) prevents WebMail from connecting to the POP3 server. Make sure the POP3 server address is considered correct.
Users with a mailbox on Exchange Server 2016 or Exchange Server 2013 may find that the connection time for POP3 or IMAP4 has stopped working. Additionally, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft.Exchange.Monitoring.ProtocolException: Authentication failed.
The connection is closed. Unable to read transport connection data: à
an existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote desktop support host. Server response when creating
Unite:[]. —> System.IO.IOException: no transport data read
Connection: An existing connection to the nearest remote host was forcibly closed. —>

Symptom 2
Users can Telnet to a specific POP3 or IMAP protocol through the server FQDN port. However, they don’t use a confirmation banner. Instead, they just see a blank screen.
Reason
This issue occurs because the PopProxy and ImapProxy components are inactive.
You will definitely use the Get-ServerComponentState
command to successfully check the status of the components.
Resolution
To resolve the following issue, enable PopProxy and the wrong components. To do this, follow the separate steps:

Use the following command to determine that this requestor made PopProxy inactive:

To allow external POP3 clients to connect to mailboxes on the fly, you usually need to configure the FQDN of the POP3 server, TCP port, and an encrypted security method for external connections. There are good reasons for taking this step to specify external POP3 settings in Outlook on the web (formerly known as Outlook Web App) under Options> Options> Mail> Accounts> POP & IMAP.

Can’t connect to POP3 server?
Make sure the POP3 server address is correct. Also, you need to configure your firewall / antivirus to allow WebMail to send / receive emails over SMTP / POP3 (25 and 110 ports). To see if the issue is really caused by your firewall / antivirus, just turn it off for testing and try to reproduce the problem.
