I am using a Kubuntu guest which definitely uses a Windows 7 (Professional Host x64) shared folder. I used to need the shared folders to work fine, but when I updated VirtualBox, writing to the shared folder stopped working. I can still browse and mount files with directories in a shared folder easily, but when I try to upload a file, I get a diet error.

Have you tried reinstalling Guest Additions? I know that even with a basic native install (I’m not talking about most GA modules) the VB kernel modules have some problems loading the last two Ubuntu kernel declarations correctly. Thus, recompiling modules that work fine may also solve your problem.
What You and your family can also try by changing the shared folder itself. Use a subfolder, not the entire hard drive. Also, use a more appropriate name, what you have now, C_DRIVE, can cause problems because everything is uppercase and underscore.

No. While sharing an entire drive is far from the smartest idea, it’s not such a big deal. There is no problem with the name of the shared folder. It works great with previous VirtualBox products.
I tried to set up several other shared folders called “inetpub” mapped to C: inetpub . As before, creating, associating and examining files from the shared drive works fine, and the log error message only appears when trying to copy to the shared folder.
Somehow n It was, I figured out what and what the danger is, it makes sense. The virtual machine attempting to write to the shared directory has the same access rights as the player running VirtualBox on the host operating system, minus administrator rights (unless VirtualBox is running as administrator). I tried to edit / create songs in the C: Inetpub folder on the host. When I started VirtualBox in normal mode and tried to write somewhere that a user of my OS without an administrator would not always have access, I started browsing and received a “protocol error” message. If I run VirtualBox running as administrator, I can write files to it without this problem.
Chances are, my limited use of shared folders turned files only into documents in my own folders.

Quite right. Windows 8 is very picky about where to write files. If this is a place where a regular user shouldn’t write, such as rooting or a place on websites, then so is VB. You would get the same thing if you shared On and the Linux host and tried to send to / or another location that is not actually writable by regular users.
