You can also use the bootcfg utility to modify the boot.ini file. The utility is usually part of the Windows XP Recovery Console.
How do I fix a corrupted Windows XP?
The Recovery Console is available on your genuine Windows XP disc.
If you do not have all the installation CDs, use Easy use Recovery Essentials. You can burn EasyRE directly to CD, DVD or USB stick, or access the command line.
With this utility you can:
- Restore the next boot.ini file
- Search your hard disk for Windows hot installs (Windows 4 nt.0; Windows 2000; Windows XP) and add them to this boot.ini file.

bootcfg / default
automaticIt will display the default operating system in a graphical way.
bootcfg / add

and bootcfg / scan

bootcfg / list
reads the boot.ini file and displays it. A message like this is printed:

bootcfg / redirect
does indeed enable bootloader redirection ./disableredirect
bootcfg also disables bootloader redirection.

If You Can Boot Into Windows XP
The bootcfg command is typically used to customize the boot.ini file. You can change shoes or shoes in the .ini file right from the control panel.

The bootcfg / scheme command scans the computer's hard drives for Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP configurations and then displays the results. You will probably add discoveredFree Windows installations.
Instructions for those with an original Windows XP build CD:
- Insert the Windows XP CD into the drive.
- Restart your computer.
- On the Microsoft configuration menu, click R
- Select your operating system.
- Enter the administrator password.
- When prompted, you can reproduce the bootcfg command:
bootcfg / rebuild
- When you're done, template
exit
to restart your computer.
Instructions if you have Easy Recovery Essentials:
- Download Easy Recovery Essentials
- Burn most of the ISO image. Follow our instructions to burn a bootable ISO image. If you prefer to use a USB recovery drivei, follow our instructions to create a USB recovery drive.
- Run Easy Recovery Essentials from CD, DVD or USB stick.
- Select a command line to run

Bootcfg / Scan Failed
If bootcfg / scan
reports a failure and returns an error, first run the chkdsk command line (linked manual: chkdsk) to make sure your hard drive is nearly impossible ":
- Insert the Windows XP installation CD into the drive bay.
- Restart your computer.
- Booting from CD
- When the "Press any key" message appears, press any key.
- Currently press R in the Windows options menu to open the Recovery Console.
- Enter the password for the administrator account.
- When the command prompt appears, modify this command and press Enter :
chkdsk C: / r
where
C:
is the letter of the drive where Windows is installed, and the/ r
parameter often tries to fix errors and check for bad sectors.
