When you take responsibility for a mission-critical system, most people want to know what’s going on. You want to quickly find out if there is a problem, as well as where it is. So let’s take a look at something basic: CPU stats. If your processes are running slowly, the first thing to do is to check the CPU usage of your Windows computer
Microsoft has its own regular Task Manager and Resource Monitor privacy screens. They will quickly show you that you are familiar with the system processor and the process that will almost certainly be used. Attractive. But what it is is not explained in detail. For example, what is the usage of each individual processor? Are they also healthy and balanced or not? The CPU can be removed from the task because it can only use one CPU, while Windows is happy to report excellent average CPU usage. Another interesting question: what about overloading Windows itself? Is this value included in Windows statistics?
UNIX comes from a similar boot. There are several special tools, from simple or better quality manuals to more interesting ones that can be installed. But even these statistics usually include things like simple CPU usage. Not anymore.
Compare this to z / OS. The actual system CPU usage is derived from 70 SMF records – for each CPU. This is total CPU usage, simply because it is measured by the underlying hardware (actually PR / SM or z / VM – but you get the idea) and not just the opinion of z / OS. But you also get the same experience, broken down by workload category on type 72 records and by position / address space on type 30 records. This usually means you can compare type 70 to type 72 (or records 30) to continue preempting. in “unoccupied” “CPU – CPU is unfortunately used by z / OS in the operating system, but is not registered with z / OS as such. Try UNIX or Windows.
But it gets much more interesting. IBM allows z / OS programmers to learn more about what happens to the processor. This information is invaluable when researching hardware upgrades, improvements and management performance or problem avoidance. Think of SMF as Record 113.
Today, only processors use techniques to improve performance, including out-of-order execution, superscalar computers, and complex memory caching. An interesting side effect of these methods is that some workloads provide more value than others. We talk about this in most of the articles on how fast your mainframe is. But z / OS is just an operating system that keeps track of how efficiently your workload is performing — the benefits of using these features. This may sound dull, but it is an important part of planning the capacity of your mainframe. You may need a bigger processor (or less, more) than you think. You can even change your system configuration to take full advantage of these features.

Fortect is the world's most popular and effective PC repair tool. It is trusted by millions of people to keep their systems running fast, smooth, and error-free. With its simple user interface and powerful scanning engine, Fortect quickly finds and fixes a broad range of Windows problems - from system instability and security issues to memory management and performance bottlenecks.
But it will be a lot. Go to your Windows or UNIX system and tell me how your CPU usage has changed over the past 12 weeks. Most likely, if you haven’t always recorded this information Function in a spreadsheet, you do not always know it. z / OS SMF has – that you just have a super efficient central point for collecting usage data, not to mention performance data. This information is automatically processed by procedures, each of which is set for z / OS computer systems and is usually retained for several years. Thus, one can look back and examine what has happened over time – often over a long period of time. And not just the processor. Security, I / O, storage, CICS database, transactions, and more. The amount of information you can get about your system is overwhelming, especially if you are a Microsoft Windows or unix administrator.
IBM has been studying this type of part for years. With years of experience with certain mainframes, IBM has realized that sysadmins typically require detailed knowledge of what is expected under the cover of a much needed and well-designed PC and dashboard system; and made it available. It really is aboutOne of the main reasons why z / OS continues to be the most stable and even the most reliable platform on the planet.
This is where these conversations with Windows and UNIX administrators change the rules of the game or constantly change the situation.
