If Time Machine indicates that your cloned hard drive cannot be used to back up or restore these files, try these solutions.

  • Make sure you are using a Time Machine supported rear wheel drive.
  • If you are not using a network hard drive, make sure the backup drive is connected directly to your Mac and not through a USB portal or other device.
  • If your backup drive is probably directly connected to your Mac, Use Disk Utility to repair the disk.
  • If you are using an absolute network drive, make sure you have a good network connection and that your Mac is connected to the same network as the backup drive. If you completed a previous trusted backup successfully, test that backup by holding the Option key and selecting Validate Backups in Time Machine Food Picker from the menu bar.
  • Make sure the latest firmware is installed on the backup disk. For detailed information about the hard disk, contact the manufacturer after the backup.
  • If none of the solutions work, start over by erasing the backup CD or DVD, then reselect the backup drive using Time use Machine.

What to do when you get a time machine error message?

Let the process go through or until you see another marketing mistake. Typically, if you see an error message, please post the exact text of the message. You can watch the verification process by holding down the Option key and clicking the Time Machine clock icon.

General troubleshooting Make sure the rescue disk is inserted, turned on, and properly connected to your Mac. If your entire backup hard drive is online, make sure the hard drive and your Mac are online.
